Hand Up, Not Hand Out

There are many of us who think that small business will be the engine that drives us into recovery, so whilst I often comment here on the FTSE, and large corporate profits, that is more a factor of the availability of content than an indicator of my bias.  It is therefore a great delight to see this report on the success of a scheme in Southwark that has taken unemployed people on a notorious estate and given them mentoring and seed capital.

The success of the project can be seen in the smiles of those participating and other intangibles like confidence, hope and raised expectations – and hopefully will be measured in due course in the success of the businesses.  Well done to Red Ochre, the social enterprise specialists, in leading on this government-funded project.

    Great article James.

It’s easy to be cynical and see this as an exception but if it can be done here, it can be done elsewhere.

Perhaps it’ll provide hope for poorer areas and unemployed people everywhere.
